About This Pipe

Asami Kikuchi discovered her passion for pipe making in her twenties after using the machinery at the Ikebana Pipe Workshop for a school assignment. Captivated almost at once, she sought permission to remain and further explore the craft. Under the guidance of Kazuhiro Fukuda — then supervisor of the workshop and a protégé of Sixten Ivarsson — Kikuchi refined her skills, ultimately becoming a full-time artisan at Ikebana in 2013.

This Volcano reflects her sculptural sensibilities in a compact yet expressive form. Though modest in overall length, the pipe boasts a dynamic, flowing posture, its bent outline capturing the eye. The visual rhythm begins at the squat, Pot-like bowl and sweeps gracefully through the rising shank to the sharply arced saddle stem. A defined ridgeline separates the upper and lower portions of the stummel, accentuating the stummel's sense of movement while lending crisp structure to the design.

Despite its tidy footprint, the pipe feels satisfyingly robust in hand, with enough breadth and curvature to fill the palm comfortably. A warm smooth finish illuminates the briar's natural beauty, revealing fine strands of flame grain along the flanks and dense clusters of birdseye across the rim and underside.
