About This Pipe

Texas-based artisan Trey Rice has long held an appreciation for handmade craftsmanship, with his backgrounds in woodworking and architecture alike translating naturally to the pipe-making medium. In addition to fellow American carvers, Rice draws particular inspiration from classic English and Danish design, his style focused on clean line work and refined shaping. This Bulldog illustrates his thorough understanding of traditional Anglo-French design, with its balanced proportions making for a timeless rendition of the shape-chart standard. The bowl stands at the fore of the composition with a slight forward cant, its walls showing a gradual flare from the firm heel toward a pair of finely carved beadlines at the waist, which then mark a steady taper to the flat rim. Arrow-straight in its trajectory, the form's iconic diamond shank emerges from the bowl and meets a sleek saddle stem, the latter of which keeps the profile neat and trim. Fashioned from rich cumberland, the stem's variegated hues add a subtle dose of color to this pipe's reserved palette, with the stummel dressed in a crisp, inky sandblast that reveals handsome grain across the briar.
