About This Pipe

Rattray's "130" is a unique design found only in the Scottish marque's Devil's Cut series. Resembling a Poker, it sits sturdily upright thanks to the flattened heel, and the bowl exudes bulging, Barrel-like flanks for a sublime fit in hand — the Barrel aesthetic furthered by pairs of beadlines close to the rim and transition. It's a compact design lengthwise; however, the bowl offers the height and chamber depth of a Stack, making for a Nosewarmer that doesn't sacrifice any room for your favorite blend.

Rattray's Devil's Cut series takes its name from the portion of whisky unavoidably absorbed by the barrel in which the liquor is aging. The line consists of the Scottish marque's "130" shape which appropriately calls to mind a whisky barrel in its stout proportions and sets of beadlines. The Devil's Cut series also features reverse Calabash engineering, the muscular shank of each pipe containing an expansive cooling chamber inside. This particular example is finished in a chestnut-stained sandblast and accented with a warm copper band. This particular "G" example is fashioned from ash wood and features a graphite chamber insert that is tasteless, odorless, and easy to clean.

Note: While all of our other pipes are photographed individually, these are not, and you may expect some reasonable cosmetic variation between the example we've photographed and the pipe you've received.

Okay first things first, the pipe looks amazing.... if a comically large bowl is something you're into. In terms of practicality: it's heavy, 4oz to be precise. It can be clenched for sure but not for long. The "G" system aka graphite wall (the reason why i bought it) has 2 major pros and a major con in my opinion. The pros: cleaning the bowl is as easy as it gets and not having a carbon layer makes it an ideal condidate for a pocket pipe, no carbon layer = no lingering odor. It also means that it won't ghost! Great stuff, now the con: moisture!!! The G wall cannot absord any of it, so naturally it all ends up traveling down the shank. The Savinelli balsa filters mitigate a lot of it, in the expense however of a more constricting draw. Overall i like it and i use it daily...Read More

I finally got one in November and thoroughly enjoyed it... then, my wife got me a tin of RATTRAYS Bagpipers Dream for my birthday yesterday. After trying it out in my Rattrays The Bagpiper yesterday, I loaded my Devils Cut with this blend this morning. I normally hate aromatics (thinking my beloved spouse had made a horrible choice) but Bagpipers Dream in this huge pipe was wonderful. As others mentioned it tasted like real cognac and got along well with all the cuts of tobacco in the blend -- A lovely gift from my bride of 50 years!...Read More
