About This Pipe
Taking inspiration from the Danish and Japanese pipe-making traditions, Ping Zhan crafts pipes that prioritized deft line work, gorgeous finishes, and a distinctly organic aesthetic, with all three of those elements represented by this stunning Fugu. A long, curvaceous design, this piece sees an asymmetrical, horizontally compressed bowl posed at the fore of an incredibly trim, tapering shank extended by two knuckles of bamboo. Said bamboo is accented with nodes of mammoth, and it bridges the briar stummel to a demurely curved saddle stem of pearl-hued ivorite. The trimness of the shank-and-stem arrangement pushes attention to the bowl, which is unevenly bifurcated by a crisp ridgeline that terminates in a fin-like protrusion at the transition. Dressing this piece is a warm smooth finish that highlights gorgeous grain throughout the stummel, with dense clusters of birdseye populating the bowl's flanks.
