After becoming fascinated with pipes, Austin Quinlan began buying and restoring estate pieces, expanding his personal collection of smokers while simultaneously learning the tooling and engineering involved in the craft. Quinlan has since developed a personal style rooted in the Anglo-French tradition, curating a portfolio of classic designs typified by compact lengths and stout proportions. The Irish artisan's affinity for short, muscular designs is demonstrated by this bent Dublin, a dense composition with a weighty in-hand presence, despite its abbreviated length. Though this piece possesses a North American-style build and proportionality, the overall form brings to mind the Danish school's softness, with the stout, muscular bowl growing out of a lifted heel that lends the pipe's fore a forward-surging posture. Likewise, the gently curved shank and stem evokes the gestural lines usually seen in Danish craftsmanship, the totality of the arrangement providing balance to the overall composition while continuing the restrained undercurve started at the bowl.
