Cornell & Diehl - Midnight Orchard 2oz
The future of aromatics… hopefully
Nothing goopy or sticky about this one. A nice citrus note, not too far from the note of quality Virginias. Besides that the honey casing really just deepens and slightly sweetens the experience. I also pick up something like orange blossom or honeysuckle playing through the mix. All in all it’s sweet, lightly complex, a little earthy, and pleasantly natural tasting. A wonderful smoke. That however was not my first impression when trying the freshly opened tin. I HIGHLY recommend letting this one breathe for a week or so before making your assessment. Mine has been in a jar for about 2 weeks at this point. I also only give it about 5 minutes to dry now as I found it rough and unpleasant after 15 minutes. Leave it a little moist and thank me later.

Gotta have that funk
This blend has all the funky perique goodness you could want. I actually find it quite dynamic however. If you smoke it hot you can really pull out that funky fermented fruit and pepper taste (which is great), or you can slow it down and sip for the intricacies that you want from a quality VaPer. I catch myself doing both, usually in the same sitting. It also packs a punch on the nic side (and I’m also a frequent cigar guy), so be careful if you are running it a little hot. I find it great with a cup of Irish breakfast tea in the morning but it’s also a great blend for a warm summer evening. The tin note is exactly what you would imagine from something with this much perique, deep vinegar and fruit… pleasant. And the room note is surprisingly sweet as well. I’m on my first tin of this blend and definitely looking forward to aging some in the cellar.

Simple complexity
With the short list of ingredients in this blend one might expect something good but simple… and you wouldn’t be wrong. And yet, there lies a complexity here that was a tad unexpected. The play between the different Virginias is well noted and interwoven with an interesting sweet and incense type complexity from the oriental leaf. This keeps the flavor constantly dancing in and out of different tasting notes on the pallet. The light casing of honey really only deepens what is already happening in this blend. What this gives to the smoker is a deep flavor, sweet and rich, without being an “after dinner” smoke.The room note is incredible, rich and sweet as well, way more than brought out with most Virginia blends. All of this flavor and yet it’s also very well behaved in the bowl. This all from a fresh tin?! I can’t wait to try this blend with some age behind it.
Cornell & Diehl - Afternoon Delight 2oz
Not a fan
The best way I can see you to describe this is a lightly flavored burley blend with little flavor. Honestly, haunted bookshop is more complex with less of a cigarette taste. The maple did little to help. Sadly, I’ll be throwing this out.
