Cornell & Diehl - Cross-Eyed Cricket 2oz
Pretty good for an aromatic
I’m not much of an aromatic smoker. I always keep some on hand for smoking around others that may not appreciate the smell of straight tobacco. This one is always a crowd pleaser. Smooth and flavorful without giving me the sticky aro mouthfeel. Though I think I’d like more perique.

Another winner for this lineup
This is the second blend from this VA plug lineup I’ve tried, the first being watchman’s reach. Both are excellent for a VA smoker like myself. The reds in this blend are soft, sweet and flavorful. The plugs allow you to customize your cut to your preference in any situation. I’ve found myself using gardening shears as an easy and convenient method for cutting any width of flakes or a chunky cube cut. You won’t find complexity, but you will find solid VA’s that don’t disappoint.

A must try for any VA smoker
I decided to try this because I enjoy plugs and I enjoy VAs. I was a little worried I’d have to age it before it would be really enjoyable, but still wanted to try it. I ended up finishing the tin before I needed to put it in a jar. Perfect, delicate, sweet tobacco that is excellent to relax with after a long day outdoors. I went ahead and threw the other three plugs from this lineup in my next order. I hope these stick around for awhile.

Good, solid VA
I typically enjoy English blends in the winter and VA, VA/per in the warmer months. Not a big aromatic smoker. I decided to try this blend out to see if it will serve as a tobacco to have on hand this summer when I can’t decide which blend to pick. It is most decidedly that blend. A good, simple sweet tobacco flavor with a creamy smoke and a long burn. I find myself loading it when I don’t know what blend to pick. It’s perfect for mowing the lawn or going on a hike. A must have for fishing. It won’t blow your socks off, hence the four stars, but it is always satisfying.
Cornell & Diehl - Poplar Camp
Solid
This is my go-to blend. Bayou morning flake used to be, but this has a better price point, is available in bulk, and the addition of black cavendish gives it similar notes. Strong enough to satisfy a former cigarette smoker. Smooth upon delivery and only gets better with time. I’ll smoke 3-4 pipes a day and at least one, if not all, is always poplar camp.
G. L. Pease - Spark Plug 2oz
Excellent English
This may be my new favorite English blend. It’s like reading an old leather-bound book in an oak library. Easy to cut into thin flakes that I fold and stuff into the pipe. Burns well once you get it going.
Lane Limited - 1-Q
Social Smoke
Good social blend. Pretty wet, but dries out enough in the pipe roll while out and about. Very pleasant smell and flavor. Not a whole lot of nic so I can smoke all day without feeling sick. Not one I’d choose to smoke by myself, but great for around others.
Peter Stokkebye - PS400 Luxury Navy Flake
It’s ok
I wanted to like this one more, I just don’t get a whole lot of flavor from it. What I get is good and at least this one is available in bulk, but I much prefer bayou morning flake.
Cornell & Diehl - Black Frigate 2oz
Completes the picture
This blend has exactly what blockade runner is wanting. Each component is perfectly balanced to give a smooth, flavorful, satisfying smoke. Pressed into a cake of perfect density and moisture for my liking. Going to make sure I keep some in my cellar from now on.
Missouri Meerschaum - The Wyatt
Good smoke
This is a solid cob. Lightweight and comfortable to clench. Decent sized bowl, slightly shorter but wider than the chamber in my mark Twain. Gets hot towards the middle of the spool as expected, this will probably be the failure point. Overall I’d say it’s a good price for a uniquely shaped cob with an acrylic bit based on current prices. Updating review to add that this pipe DOES take a 6mm filter. The description states it does not.

Tasty but temperamental
Opening this tin smells like cracking a bottle of really good rum. You’re presented with an attractive, wet brownie that breaks apart easily. I don’t typically dry my tobacco, but this one it is a requirement. Since it is so moist you really have to pay attention to your smoke as it is liable to bite. Go slow and keep a steady cadence and you will be greatly rewarded. I can tell the virginias will only improve with age.
Cornell & Diehl - Bayou Night
Outstanding
This is a real treat. Sweet, spicy, smoky, it has everything. Smokes really cool with a good nic hit. I can’t believe it doesn’t have a higher rating.
Cornell & Diehl - Bayou Morning Flake 2oz
Best way to start the day
This has everything I’m looking for as a first smoke of the day. As a former cigarette smoker and vaper that switched to pipes, this has the nicotine I want with my morning coffee. The virginia and Perique complement each other so well in this blend, it has to be the perfect ratio. I need to stock up on 8 oz tins since starting the day without BMF is like starting the day without a cup of joe.
Rivertown Tobacco Works - Sunrise Select
Meh. Needs time. (Updated)
I tried it fresh out of the bag on delivery and was disappointed. It didn’t have much of a scent and was very dry. However, the dryness didn’t effect the pack nor burn. The first smoke was disappointing without much flavor so I let it sit in a jar for a week. Coming back to it after a week is much better, but not outstanding. Previously it would have gotten maybe 1.5 stars. The jar note is of fresh cut hay and the smoke is light and citrusy with toasty notes on the retro. It needs some time to age and would probably make a good blender. Nicotine is pretty mild. I could see myself puffing on this while mowing this summer. This makes a pretty good VAPer with some of C&D’s granulated perique in an 8:2 ratio.
Rivertown Tobacco Works - Crimson Shadow
A new regular
This is a very enjoyable blend and one I could see becoming my new daily. Sweet and grassy without leaving the mouth feeling sticky. Nicotine may be a little overstated as it comes off very mild to me, though I have a good tolerance. Low maintenance burn that requires very little in the way of tamping or relights.
