Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Rum Flake
Good tobacco
I tend to prefer fairly bold, sweet aromatics. This Rum Flake has a truly wonderful tin note: definitely spicy, but not alcoholic. During the smoke, the various nuances have to be teased out with a slow cadence. It burns beautifully, and the tobacco flavor is quite evident, as the topping isn’t particularly delicate. My 2 oz of bulk weren’t excessively moist and were already quite good to smoke, perhaps because they weren’t especially fresh. I’ll try ordering it again as soon as it becomes available, because a new batch might release a more pronounced topping. It’s a satisfying smoke that reveals its flavors especially well through the retrohale. I wouldn’t describe it as excessively sweet, but rather as flavorful.

More perique no Latakia: sweet!
After trying the Mississippi River, I was impressed because, although I don't love Latakia, that whisper of smokiness is really in the background. But with this Reserve, I am truly excited! At the start, they seem the same, but after a while, you realize that the Perique is much more evident, and in the smoke, there is much, much less smokiness and more sweetness and tartness, thanks to that magnificent Perique. I’m going to get more to set aside. Great tobacco!!!

I had been thinking about trying it for a long time, but I was worried about the Latakia, since I'm not a big fan of it. In the end, though, I gave in and bought it—and I'm so glad I did. It's wonderful. The Latakia is just a delicate whisper in the background, never overpowering the Virginias. I'll definitely be buying more; it's absolutely worth it.
