Tobacco Jars - Peterson Oxblood Sherlock Holmes Tobacco Jar
Great, with a Caveat
I just realized that I forgot to review this jar. I bought mine two or three years ago (I swear my memory is crapping out and I’m not even 48 until April) but whenever it was I’ve had it and used it since then. I personally love mine, and I must admit that part of that is because it’s Sherlock Holmes-themed and I’d buy a mousetrap if it had Holmes and/or Watson on it. Here’s the caveat: it’s not an air-tight tobacco jar. The description says that it is but that’s not been my experience and I see that’s not been the experience of some of the other reviewers. If you’re putting tobacco in here you should be putting one of the little tobacco pouch humidifier ‘coins’ (which is a good tip for even truly air-tight containers, because it’s always possible that something that was air-tight gets knocked off onto the floor or because your house gets really cold in the winter/hot and humid during the summer and it messes with the seal. Those little ‘coins’ are cheap and worth every penny IMHO.) that you can buy here and at your local B&M tobacconist to keep the tobacco from drying out. Other than that it’s a lovely little tobacco jar that I keep on my nightstand for when I’m smoking my last pipe of the day before sleep comes for me. I like it a lot, it holds a good amount of tobacco, and if you put a humidifier ‘coin’ in there it will keep your tobacco fresh and tasty. And if you don’t want yours, I’ll be happy to take it off of your hands; just ship it to me here in Maryland.

There’s not much to say - it’s a nice jar for a great price, it holds delicious pipe tobacco, and it fits nicely on my nightstand. I need to order a few more.
Captain Black - Original 12oz
The Captain Keeps Sailing
Captain Black can certainly be a point of contention between fellow pipe smokers - people either seem to love it or absolutely despise it. I happen to enjoy it myself and have for almost twenty years now. No, it’s not fancy. Yes, it will bite new smokers who puff on a pipe like they would a cigarette. No, there’s probably no one in your local pipe club that will congratulate you on smoking this blend. Yes, even people who are vehemently opposed to smoking will compliment how well this blend smells. For that reason it is the perfect blend to smoke when you are out in public. Captain Black is one of the only aromatic blends that I still smoke, having begun to prefer English blends about a decade or so ago. It’s worth keeping some on hand and giving it a shot.
Cornell & Diehl - MMIV: Rise of the Mixture Monster 3oz
Enjoyable.
I found this to be a pleasant smoke. Like most aromatics it smells better than it tastes, but it was by no means a boring smoke. Some nice but somewhat muted notes of apple and caramel buried within tobacco that is moist but not overly slow and that required no relights. I am going to pick up another tin or two to cellar and pull out when I find myself in an aromatic mood, as I often do during the Autumn and Winter months.
