About This Pipe
I don't believe I've personally encountered any outright classics from Tokutomi before this piece. One of only a few Lovat renditions we've seen from the carver, it's beautifully in keeping with his Danish-inspired approach to the form, with a soft, gentle sense of lift at the heel, followed by a soft, easy curve at the poised flanks. The eye travels easily from bowl to shank, with a good bit of briar remaining at the transition to act as a bridge (though not so much as the carver's sleeker, overtly tapering pieces). The chamber is of the slightly narrower variety and the finish is seriously stunning, accentuating a gorgeous presentation of grain, courtesy of a stellar cross-cut pattern. Not to be overlooked is Tokutomi's bit work, with a slim, soft saddle well-primed for a comfortable clench in the jaw. Beautiful work.
