About This Pipe

One of America's most influential artisan pipe makers, Todd Johnson crafts meticulously rendered compositions inspired by the work of Danish and Japanese masters. The Sarcophagus is one of Johnson's signature shapes — and a rare one at that— appearing only occasionally in his portfolio. Shape-wise, the Sarcophagus recalls Eltang's Eskimo design, with both featuring squat, Bulldog-like bowls and wide, ridgeline-framed shanks. However, unlike Eltang's design, the Sarcophagus boasts a gently curved transition and a shank with a more consistent breadth and fullness.

This particular iteration is among Johnson's more fluid interpretations, featuring a sweeping undercurve that seamlessly unites the robust fore with the trimmer shank-and-stem arrangement. Being a Todd Johnson design, the piece is host to a wealth of attractive grain, with birdseye and rippling strands of flame covering the briar's surface. Additionally, the briar stem topping the composition is not a separate mouthpiece but an extension of the stummel itself. Expertly shaped and finished, it mimics the appearance of a removable stem while seamlessly integrating into the broader stummel. This design choice not only enhances the pipe's visual cohesion but also emphasizes Johnson's meticulous craftsmanship and innovative approach to shaping.
