Sandblasted Samurai Volcano (Hoplite) Tobacco Pipe

Todd Johnson is one of the most prominent, recognizable forces behind the American pipe-making movement, his work having influenced scores of other artisans who came after him. Johnson's pipes boast a complex and sophisticated shaping language, where classic profiles cross paths with interpretive works of a highly sculptural nature, the incredible artistry behind these pipes earning him a reputation for excellence. Throughout his more than two decades of carving experience, Todd has crafted a number of signature shapes that often leverage that sculptural style, with the Samurai Volcano being one of his most striking creations. This iteration is an excellent example of the shape, presenting a remarkably vertical build poised for comfortable smoking, its shank curling out of a tight transition. This shank is thick, though it quickly tapers as it reaches up to meet a sleek and smartly curved saddle stem crafted from black vulcanite veined with vibrant streaks of green, and the base of this stem features a stepped flare for further visual intrigue at the aft side of this pipe.

Up front, the bowl showcases this shape's most unique feature, maintaining the Volcano's iconic low-set base and wrapping ridgeline, though giving life to this line by extending it out and down at the aft side: creating a spur-like structure that draws the eye and allows this pipe to sit sturdily while resting on it. The base's ridge surrounds a supple, curved underside that bows out near the middle, working with the aft-side spur to create a fluid S-shape that undergirds and supports the bowl. Said bowl is thick, with stout walls that take on a sleek, forward-urging taper to the rim, its fore wall curving inward while the aft wall bows out to create a hearty, yet streamlined look. There's an impressively regal character about this silhouette, one that stands tall and proud while displaying a flowing organicism and a harmonious compositional balance. This shape is steeped in the stylistic language of the Japanese school, and that comes as no surprise given Johnson's great appreciation for the Japanese tradition, deftly displaying his skill in marrying hearty, robust features to graceful curves. Dressed in a crisp sandblast and a dark, inky stain, the stummel showcases a stunning pattern of densely stacked ring grain flowing down the walls of the bowl, while the underside is finished smooth: revealing dense, dusky birdseye and a kiss of plateau across the aft side.
