About This Pipe

Continuing a familial pipe-making tradition that spans three generations, Nanna Ivarsson is among the world's most esteemed and respected artisans. Her work not only represents the highest levels of engineering and craftsmanship, but her shaping style is distinguished, distinctive, and aesthetically profound: Collectors prize her work for their smoking qualities and artistry, and other pipe makers often create their own versions of her designs in homage to her reputation. While her shaping style is understandably informed by her father, Lars, and grandfather, Sixten, before her, Nanna's own creative lens shines in each of her pieces.

This bent Apple is a comparatively restrained design from Nanna — perfect for collectors drawn to classic shapes of superlative quality. While minimalist, it lacks nothing in distinction or signature Nanna design cues. Her portfolio is saturated with pieces whose shank taper dramatically toward the transition, and while that aspect is present here, it's much more conservative, and the shank also bears an oval cross section, smoothing out the profile even more. The plump Apple bowl maintains a traditional air and perfectly captures the best of the briar's grain, with tendrils of flame grain rising from heel to rim. Capping the shank is a pale ring of boxwood for subtle contrast, and the stem base's domed nature is yet another signature design cue from Nanne, effectively maintaining the composition's smooth curves, while still drawing focus to the boxwood's expanse.
