Smooth Acorn with Boxwood (1323) Tobacco Pipe

Continuing a familial pipe-making tradition that spans three generations, Nanna Ivarsson is among the world's most esteemed and respected artisans. Her work not only represents the highest levels of engineering and craftsmanship, but her shaping style is distinguished, distinctive, and aesthetically profound: Collectors prize her work for their smoking qualities and artistry, and other pipe makers often create their own versions of her designs in homage to her reputation. While her shaping style is understandably informed by her father, Lars, and grandfather, Sixten, before her, Nanna's own creative lens shines in each of her pieces.

The Acorn is a shape inextricably tied to the Ivarsson family, with Sixten's iconic Peewit design having become a staple within the artisan pipe-making community. That said, Nanna's Acorn here differs from the iconic Peewit, bearing a more generously rounded bowl, a tighter transition, and a more flourishing, flaring shank. In fact, this particular iteration is one she's returned to numerous times, and her Acorn renditions typically fall into two camps: One resembles this piece, while others feature consistent undercurves that forgo the Acorn's sometimes-characteristic heel spur — some even with elongated shanks.

Such a version as this contributes a strong degree of contrast to the composition; the bowl's plump profile stands in stark contrast against the slender transition, lending the bowl a perched posture — as if balanced on the end of a branch. The composition remains well balanced despite such contrast, as the flaring shank counters the visual weight of the bowl. Moreover, this is a quite a compact pipe by Nanna, catering to collectors of smaller pipes and a relative rarity within the Danish carver's portfolio. Her signature design cues remain present through the flaring shank and the domed stem base, maintaining the shape's curvaceous disposition, and a ring of boxwood adds subtle contrast to the color palette while the stummel reveals stunning strands of flame grain throughout.
