About This Pipe
American artisan Jody Davis has carved fine pipes for decades, cultivating a Danish-inflected style that helped popularize the shapes and features of that school in the contemporary American briar vernacular. Davis pipes are few and far between these days, balancing pipe carving with a busy touring and fatherhood schedule. This robust Lumberman is a well-executed rendition of the classic shape, placing a tall, proud bowl at the fore of a lengthy oval shank with a firm heel and straight, towering walls. The design is quite timeless, with an emphasis on the bowl, which houses a generous chamber for long smokes while offering an authoritative presence in hand. Out back, an abbreviated vulcanite saddle stem promotes a comfortable smoking posture, elevated by a pale band of genuine mammoth tusk, which serves as an elegant and eye-catching accent that balances the visual weight of the composition. Dressed in a rugged ruby sandblast, the stummel boasts excellent growth rings and blasted birdseye around the bowl, having earned Davis's Friar designation.
