About This Pipe
We've seen this same underlying gesture presented by certain pieces from Jared Coles before, defined by a sprawling, gradually-tapering shank leading gracefully into a plump and forward-inclined form up front. We've seen it with his renditions of the Cup and Ball shape, as well as specific takes on the bent Dublin. Here, Jared's tamped down the overt plumpness, opting to fashion a Danish-inclined take on the Acorn, the likes of which are imbued with a rolling, curved rim leading to a crisp, gentle spur at the heel. Finished in a warm, dark sandblast accentuating a tight, gorgeous spread of ring grain and blasted birdseye, the American carver opted to lend the composition one of his fetching composite bakelite stems, reinforcing its affable, rustic aesthetic. Lovely stuff.
