About This Pipe

Although the strong accentuation of lifting gesture at the bowl seen here is familiar, this Horn from Peter Heding does still stand out in comparison to others I've seen before from him. The length of the shank is the most obvious difference, as the other Horns I've seen by Peter that used this same gesture of bowl had relatively short shanks, while those I've seen with shanks closer to this one had shorter-looking, wider-rimmed bowls. The whole thing has a very muscular sense about it, flowing yet strong of motion and rounded in the upper and lower contours yet also very substantial as well. All of this actually reminds me quite a bit of some of the better Whale/Cetacean themed pipe designs I've come across, even while it keeps what is clearly a Horn shape. As for grain, well, it is a Heding Diamond grade, and sure enough the expected acres of birdseye and tight bands of flame are to be found.
