About This Pipe
Hans "Former" Nielsen is known for his crisp, clean linework, particularly as it pairs with the sweeping curvature so common in his pieces. This bent Dublin is an excellent example of the charm of that combination, with all of these elements at play. A soft ridge below the rim, a smooth-polished bevel dotted with plateau, and a striking taper to the lower bowl are all intrinsic elements to the piece, requiring a keen eye in order for the smooth flow through the transition and shank to be accomplished. It's further enhanced through a ring-accentuating sandblast below the rim and through the shank, no easy feat in general, considering the amount of stacked grain that has been brought to the fore. And as for the stain, Former's eye for palette is at play, pairing a darker, red-toned hue for the sandblast, while rim and shank-end sport a vivid contrast.
