Sandblasted Pencil Shank Billiard with Bamboo Tobacco Pipe

Tom Eltang is a venerated master of the craft and one of the most recognizable names in the world of pipe making. Over his nearly 50 years of experience, he's left an indelible mark on the craft, often cited by a myriad of younger artisans as a key influence, with many traveling to his workshop in Denmark to study under him, or simply ask him questions. Pipe making came to the Danish carver early, at the age of 11, when Eltang fashioned his first piece from a Pipe-Dan kit. After finishing school at 16, he went to study under Anne Julie, who started him off with mouthpiece repairs before teaching him about the importance of balance and precision. He moved on to making repairs for Pipe-Dan, further honing his skills and learning the inner-workings and functional design aspects of pipe making. In 1980, he opened his own workshop and has been crafting high-quality artisanal pipes ever since.

Eltang is well know for his prolific work ethic, and his portfolio showcases a wide variety of shapes, each imbued with his predilection for soft features, functional utility, and elegant balance. This straight Billiard is an example of Eltang at his most minimalist, the shape stripped down to its barest components. The petite bowl sits affably at the front of the pipe, flaring gently from its narrow rim to a supple heel, bringing to mind a budding flower. Coming out of the neat transition, the pencil-thin shank is extended by five knuckles of bamboo, with each knuckle approximately equidistant for a consistent rhythm from the transition to the start of stem's taper. The organic extension provides a warm, light touch to the pipe's overall design while an abbreviated mouthpiece of jet-black vulcanite tops off the design and completes the svelte line started by the shank. The bowl wears a dark, low-profile sandblast that draws out whispers of growth rings across the stummel, with the rim left smooth and stained a light color for a touch of contrast. It's a sleek, streamlined design, one that's perfectly balanced for a comfortable in-hand fit, and is quintessentially Eltang.
