Smooth Calabash with Cocobolo Tobacco Pipe

The Calabash design is both a shape and a type of engineering. Virtually any shape can be fashioned with Calabash engineering, which is defined by an internal chamber beneath the tobacco chamber that allows smoke to cook and condensation to dissipate before entering the airway. Traditionally, this construction was most regularly fashioned from hollowed gourd, revealing a dramatically bent and sinuous posture with a meerschaum cap housing the tobacco chamber. In more modern times, though, artisans have fashioned handmade versions from briar, with Chris Asteriou responsible for this example.

The Greek artisan has fashioned the Calabash a few times throughout his career, and they all tend to showcase a distinctive design cue that separates his versions from others'. Namely, instead of shaping a consistent and gradual curve and flare through the shank and bowl, Asteriou's Calabashes reveal more defined separation at the transition, creating a more angular profile and topped by a pointed heel — this style of heel and general angularity an oft-seen cue within his work. This specific example displays that aspect through a flattened, protruding heel, and the bowl rises upward to a domed cap of cocobolo wood. Within the cap lies a briar tobacco chamber for a consistent smoking experience, and the stummel is hollowed to feature the Calabash's defining cooling chamber. Dressed in a light smooth finish, the briar showcases stunning flame grain, while the cocobolo cap and matching shank accent add just the slightest touch of color and grain contrast. This is a remarkable example of Asteriou's engineering acumen and arresting artistry.
