Smooth Long Shank Dublin Tobacco Pipe

Based on my experience, Jess Chonowitsch doesn't revisit the Dublin shape much these days. When he does, however, the results are not unlike those of his greater body of work: that is, astounding. Imbued with just a light touch of forward cant about the bowl, this piece is rich in Danish neoclassical presence, coupled with a touch of the carver's characteristic muscularity. It's within this balance of style and substance that Jess operates, elevating the form with each successive piece.

Jess has a penchant for boldness, an aspect that's often made manifest through additional visual weight lent to the bowl in relation to the piece at large. With his Dublin renditions, though, he ebbs more toward a sense of sleekness to my eye, making use of the bowl's characteristic flare to offer the form a sense of understated, yet individual character. Finished in a gorgeously warm smooth stain, it showcases the best this particular block had to offer, too.
