About This Pipe

Old Dominion pipes began with a nearly extinct heirloom Indian corn which brothers Bob and Bill Savage, and Laurel, the latter's wife, found to produce a particularly sweet, unique cornmeal. Bringing this breed back from the brink, and finding a healthy demand for it from amateur cooks and professional chefs alike, they also soon found themselves with a lot of large, colorful cobs piling up as well. Turning up archeological evidence that their Pungo Creek Mills farmland had been the site of a clay and cob pipe making operation dating back to the colonial period, an answer as to what to do with all these distinctive corn cobs presented itself.

That answer, of course, was to hand-craft them into sweet-smoking cobs fitted with bamboo cane stems - pipes just like those the planters who'd come before them had enjoyed over two centuries ago.

Note: All measurements listed are approximate, as there will be some variation from individual pipe to individual pipe.

Stems split

Nice that they require little break-in period but unfortunately they don't hold up to any kind of clenching.

I enjoy using cob's while on trips, or out hunting because they always smoke well and they wont break the bank (or my heart) if they get lost or broken. This was the first cob I have smoked from Old Dominion and I was very pleased. It is exceedingly light, and seems to be a high quality cob for the bowl. The only hiccup I've found for myself really can't be held against the pipe and was easy to fix. The stem in it's standard configuration was just about 3/4" too long for my taste, but given the materials of the pipe, it was very easy to lop off a bit with a saw, sand it smooth and it's like it never even happened...Read More
Sweet Cob

What a pleasant surprise! This was a sweet, easy smoke right from the first light. I wasn’t sure about the reed stem, but it’s comfortable, and the draw is great. This isn’t competition for MM... it’s a completely different experience. The narrow chamber was perfect for a folded flake and there’s just something about a cob with sweet Virginia that is comforting. Highly recommend. Give one a try....Read More

Was not sure what I’d get with this pipe, from the first light it was sweet, no burning off of any man made materials. This pipe smoked perfect from the first light. The stem, one you get used to it is actually more comfortable than a regular stem. I would suggest this one though as I bought a Virginia planter too and it looks like a third grader made it....Read More
Loved it until it burnt out

UPDATE 2021: The new design manufactured by Missouri Meerschaum is now a 3/4" bore just like the Virginia Planter which makes it less than ideal for shags. I'm deducting stars for this. My original review is below.

Terrific for shag. I could wish for the draw to be more open, but the use of c
ompletely natural materials makes up for it. Sadly, mine burn out on a long drive north. I should probably buy another one (or two)....Read More
