Sandblasted Rhodesian Tobacco Pipe

This piece from Jerry Zenn displays a similar form to that of the other Rhodesian in today's batch of new pipes from the Taiwanese carver. In terms of finish and materials used, though, its markedly distinct — trading the smooth finish of the other for a well-textured sandblast and forgoing the use of natural bamboo. The lack of bamboo shank extension does well to keep this piece classically-inclined and more reserved, allowing the overall shaping to take center stage. Defined by a comparatively bulbous bowl perched on the end of a shank that tapers toward the transition and is pinched along the vertical axis, the proportions remind me of Vladimir Grechukhin's signature aesthetic of heavy-set bowl designs and voluptuous curves, all imbued with a muscular disposition throughout. In Jerry's rendition, though, this piece takes on a slightly more streamlined, trimmer stance through the shank and transition, lending more visual weight to the rounded bowl, the upper section neatly tapered above the shape's conventional beadline about the waist. It's dressed in a low-profile sandblast and earthy, reddish contrast stain, while the rim and shank face have been left smooth, the latter fitted with a reinforcing metal ring around the mortise for a mount-style stem arrangement.
