About This Pipe Tobacco
Manufactured in a century-old brick building in picturesque Lauenburg, Germany, Dan pipe tobacco has gained quite a worldwide reputation among smokers, with a wide variety of blends and cuts on offer. Andreas Mund became the successor in charge of production when master blender Jürgen Westphal retired, and is assisted by Heiko Behrens as well as Michael Apitz of Dan Pipe.
The Mallard from Dan Tobacco is a pure Virginia ribbon-cut mixture featuring Virginias from Zambia, all carefully fermented and aged. With no added flavorings, it highlights the natural sweetness and richness of Virginia tobaccos. In the The Mallard Flake Plus Perique version, that base of Virginias is complemented by a touch of Perique before being pressed and cut into flakes.

rimarily outdoors. All of that being said, I found this to be a good blend for my habits and preferences. opening the tin I found the packaging to be a little less than careful, the paper that was inside was not neatly folded down but just kind of shoved down in mess and then when I peeled the paper back the little round disc that is laid over the tobacco was folded and haphazardly placed; all of this made me stop and consider how much care was taken with the tobacco itself. the tobacco flakes were not just pressed, but "stuck" together, it appeared very moist like it had some type of top dressing but none is noted in the description and I did not taste any in the smoke. The tine note is very natural with just the hint of the typical grass, hay, and malt of Virginia, I also seem to detect some of the stewed musty note of the Perique. In order to rub out I actually had to peel the flakes apart to separate, once separated the flakes rubbed out ealiy and seemed to have good moisture level so i did not allow drying time, if you employ fold and stuff packing you may want to allow a little dry time, but not long. As is my habit, I light a bowl and smoke the first half with my first cup of coffee and then I set the pipe down for 15 minutes or so and then return with my second cup. The first half of the bowl was flavorful but not overly complex, there were no "wow" moments or unexpected surprises, the flavor was very true to a VaPer. I wish there had been a little more sweetness from the Va. but that may develop with ageing (I bought a second tin for that). There is the slightest spicy tobacco tongue and nasal tickle from start to finish which made me concerned for tongue bite but that did not happen (thank goodness). After the 15 or so minute rest between 1st half 2nd half the relight produced the same flavor with a little added strength. The entirety of the bowl was pleasant straight forward tobacco with no harshness but no real particular highlights either. In comparison to my favorites of L.N.F. and Golden Sliced, I would rate it well below both, but as a stand on it's own merit blend, it is pretty good....Read More

Seems to me to be quality tobacco. A Virginia forward blend with subtle perique. Like the introverted spouse that pops in to check on things occasionally to check in while friends are visiting.

owl with little to no dry time. I pick up the typical hay and bread from the gold and brown Virginias along with a bit of hay-like and malty sweetness, perhaps a bit of spice as well, but not much in the way of citrus or grassy sweetness to my palate. The perique is definitely there in a supporting role with its touch of plum and spice. I find the smoke overall to be closer to medium than mild in flavor and nicotine throughout the bowl. Leaves a pleasantly honest Virginia tobacco aftertaste. The room note is not strong but scent-wise falls into the "tolerable" category. An enjoyable smoke. Recommended if you happen to be in the market for another VaPer blend....Read More
