Cornell & Diehl - Derringer
Just right,
Simple is sometimes best. Here, we have flue cured Virginia that has been pressed and cut into this phenomenal style of small slice. The tobacco is broken completely into these small, soft spikes. Packs well, lights well, and tastes terrific. Mellow hay like, cut grass, autumn woods aromas and taste. Over medium nic, and oh so pleasing. I’m ordering more right now.

This is your balls to four blend. Goes great with that zero dark thirty cup of coffee. Perky, spicy, mellow. Naturally aromatic, and naturally wonderful.
Sir Walter Raleigh - Aromatic 1.5oz
Not what it was,
These packs are dried out, and should be thrown in the bin. This isn’t the same pipe tobacco it was in the 1970s. The old blend had some dark cavendish. This is all golden dried out Virginia and burley. Bone dry.

Mellow, malty sweet Virginias and Kentucky fire cured make for a very good pipeful of tobacco. The fire cured is never overpowering. I couldn’t wait to reload after the first bowl.

Really boring,
I had high hopes for this blend. Nothing about this boring blend stood out. I guess people get hooked on tin art, and the name, talking themselves into really believing this is good. I couldn’t wait until my pipeful was finished.

This is an English blend that lets the delicious Virginias shine thru. The Latakia doesn’t over power, but keeps a stiff upper lip. A handsome blend

Giant,
This is BIG. Tobacco! Stout, Big tastes, and flavor. Fire cured Kentucky/Tennessee burley mingled with flue cured Virginia. This is really good, but make sure you’re a pro at smoking that pipe first. Beginners stay back. This is a tobacco to smoke after a very large meal. Never indulge on an empty stomach.

S.Gawith makes these tobaccos quite humidified. The tobacco is engineered to last, as they are sent all over the world. From arid deserts, to the Amazon basin, these tobaccos are meant to last until opened. So, when you purchase a tin or tray, it’s your business to bring the tobaccos to the desired level of humidity. ( I prefer dried out quite a bit. Not crunchy, but barely pliable. All that out of the way. Here we have a deliciously sweet Virginia. Is there brown sugars added? I’m not sure, but, I wouldn’t doubt a very small amount. Take your time and let the tobacco smolder. Sip gently, and you’ll be amazed at just how good a fine Virginia can be. Has a lightly sweet aroma.
Cornell & Diehl - Dark Fired Kentucky 2oz

Kentucky Dark fired ought to be called Southern fired tobacco, or Dixie down leaf. This is an expensive tobacco to produce.After gathering the leaves, they are hung on sticks in the rafters of tobacco barns. On the floor of those barns are small hardwood smoldering fires that create a lot of smoke. Kentucky and Tennessee produces a lot of this fine tobacco. Please remember this, a little of this tobacco goes a long way. It was Never meant to be consumed on its own. It’s a condiment tobacco.
Cornell & Diehl - Rajah's Court 2oz
Splendid!
Smooth, and creamy. Leather like, earthy and perfectly balanced. This blend lights well, burns slow, satisfies throughly. This reminds me a lot of an old Dunhill blend by the name of Durbar. Buttered toast, as in real butter, and homemade bread toast.
Samuel Gawith - Grousemoor 50g
Golden oldie.
Pure damp Virginia tobacco in ribbon form. This is a ribbon that will have to be dried and torn apart before smoking, which can take a few days. Quite a dose of our favorite vitamin, this tobacco will have you returning for more. The aromatic that is used is anyone’s guess. A wee bit floral, a wee bit almond and a wee bit vanilla. This tobacco doesn’t have the Lakeland essence of geraniums, but more of baking spices. Don’t pack too tightly, and sip slowly. Far too many pass over this genuine treasure.
Cornell & Diehl - Yale Mixture 2oz

I’m not sure how many experiments it took to perfect this fine blend, but I’m quite happy the blender at C&D created this. This blend couldn’t be more balanced. Opening the tin, it’s the Virginia that makes it to the nose first. Second, the small sprinkling of Smokey Latakia. Easy to pack, easy to light. Smokes sweet and cool. The Latakia is minor, but makes this blend incredibly wonderful. My next order will be Yale in bulk!
Samuel Gawith - Balkan Flake 8oz
Excellence,
Full Virginia Flakes in thicker slices. The most flavorful, piquant Latakia. Both, pushed together with intense pressure in blocks. Sliced, and in flake form. The earthy, leathery, aroma of the unburned tobacco is one of the most amazingly good aromas. When dried, and loaded into a pipe is when the magic begins. Sweet, tangy, creamy, Virginias, enveloping Smokey Latakia. The Latakia has not been heavily added, but in the best measure so not to overpower the elegant Virginia. The combination blend of Virginia and Latakia doesn’t seem it would be much. But it is excellent.
Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Brown Twist
A Gentle Giant,
This is flue cured, and fire cured Virginia leaf, probably from Africa. Made into ropes, and cut into thin coins. Please let this dry out quite a bit. This will take a while, but is worth it. The flavor is beautiful Smokey Virginia that, if puffed slowly, will show you sweetness. High in N, and one can be overwhelmed. Go gently with that good pipe.

What we’re seeing is, buyers who Don’t even partake in smoking a pipe that are purchasing large amounts of tobaccos so they can sell them later at an exorbitant price. True, pipe smokers be damned. But, can you blame the seller? No. It’s capitalism. Is this tobacco good? Probably, just knowing the tobaccos used.

(I used to like this, it’s good but my tastes have changed) ATTENTION: If you are stocking these tins up for later sale, that’s your business. I could really care less. I have instructed this too many times. In a vacuum nothing ages. It takes oxygen to give aging. If you want proof see a YouTube video “ who hid a fresh body in a civil war grave” It’s the story of a civil war confederate colonel who was taken out of his hermetically sealed, ( vacuum sealed) casket ) in 1977, and his buttons taken off his coat. To make a long story short, ( just see the YouTube video )The authorities thought it was a fresh corpse. Here we go. VACUUM SEALED TINS, OR ANYTHING VACUUM SEALED DOES NOT AGE! If you want that tobacco to age, put it in a mason jar. Seal it up, and let the air out every six months. All you that say you can taste a difference in aged vacuum sealed tins that are old are deceiving yourselves and others.

This is quite possibly my favorite of the Samuel Gawith tobaccos. A harmonious blend of soft mellow Virginias, married with the buttered toast of fine Turkish leaves. The flavoring, tonquin, lays back, and quietly rides along. The aroma is warm and cozy. The flavor is mellow and comforting.

Winds out of the east mate. It must mean ol Mary Poppins is coming. This tobacco is like ol Mary, perfect in every way! Pure pipe smoking bliss. The oriental polishes the Virginia, Creamy, earthy, Sublime.
Comoy's - Cask No.4
Age to Perfection.
I purchased a half pound of this tobacco, about two years ago. I put the blend in a mason jar, and put it in the tool box of my truck. That jar has been thru some severe summer heat and some fairly cold winters. I opened that jar today and enjoyed a pipeful. The Perique has gone thru a change that makes the blend almost taste like licorice has been added. The blend has become quite rich, and the virginias are almost unnoticed. All I can say is, this is ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!
Mac Baren - HH Rustica Ready Rubbed
Time Machine.
This is so good. Smooth, but strong and balanced. MacBaren’s really has impressed me with this fine tobacco. Is it strong? I’m not going to blow smoke up your arse, yes it’s strong. You’ll see Pocahontas doing somersaults nude, right down the village streets of Williamsburg,VA. It’s really a most enjoyable tobacco that tastes like no other. You’d be wise to sip slowly, and in a smaller bowl pipe. Beautiful blend.
Velvet - Velvet 1.5oz
Quite nice,
First off, dry the tobacco out well. Flavoring is licorice, and possibly brandy. The tobacco is burley/cavendish. Smooth and flavorful, and I really like it.
John Cotton's - Double Pressed Virginia 1.75oz

Hey, this is amazing mellow pipe smoking goodness! The measurements of Virginia and Turkish are perfect in every way. Flavors of real butter on sour dough toast, and an aftertaste/ aroma that stays on your taste buds and fingers that’s sooo good. I would gladly ride a CAMEL, from Chesterfield to get this old gold. This is the only blend of tobacco I’ve ordered back to back 1 lbs. bags.

My daily dose,
After my morning shower and shave, I look forward to my coffee and pipe. Lately, Orion’s Arrow has been my go to bowl of tobacco. This blend is quite satisfying and simple. Luscious Virginias, a pinch of bold Perique, and a small sprinkling of buttered toast like Turkish. Gentle, smooth and goes so well with a good cup of coffee.

I’m smoking a bowl of nineteen year old Bailey’s Front Porch. This was purchased in the large tin in 2004,and transferred to a large Mason jar for long term storage. The tobacco has transformed into one of the creamiest, and satisfying smokes! This blend was good when purchased new. This blend is pure cream now!
Fonseca - Toro Gordo
Sublime.
A wonderful cigar that was built to salute the Fonseca of yesterday. My Father did this one so well, they could just concentrate on this one blend for the next fifty years! An exquisite flavor profile of new car leather, earth, and almonds. After smoking a new one and an aged, I’m not sure which one I liked best. A fantastic cigar. I’m just amazed at how good one this really is.

The most perfect pipe tobacco blend I’ve ever tried. Mellow, luscious Virginias with the raisin-esque Perique. The orientals provide the handsome leather like earthy flavor. The cavendish has the sweet like flavor that bounces off the Turkish. Listen, pipe smokers, this is solid GOLD! Here’s more; One of the most perfect blends ever! Has a handsome aroma for a full flavor blend. Morning light also goes extremely well with your morning coffee. It certainly would be nice to purchase this blend in a large tub, or bulk. Five solid stars. This blend is sultry, and delicious. Goes quite well with Mayorga Mayan blend whole bean coffee, or Black Rifle Blackbeard’s. I smoke this at 0430 every morning whilst sitting in a rocking chair. The very best pipe tobacco to pair with your morning coffee.

Sublime, silky smooth, mouth coating like a fine wine. The oriental provides a sweet, sourness laced into the Virginia. The perique gives it a deep dark fruitiness. I cannot pick my favorite C&D blend. It’s a toss up between, Oak Alley, Orions Arrow, Exhausted Rooster, D Vinci, etc. All these are perfect blends.

So incredibly good. The Virginias are wonderfully sour and mouth watering. I could write a lot more good words about this fine mixture but, I’m going out on the porch to my rocking chair for more Yorktown!

A bright mixture with dark flecks here and there that I’m quite sure is perique. Smelling the mixture in the bag; bright Virginia fermented with a sweet but sour smell from the Turkish. Smooth as silk smoke with a sweet but sour taste, also buttered toast in the flavor. This is one special blend that I could smoke all day. It’s like the best Turkish cig you’ve ever had. The aroma is pleasant and not acrid. The balance is perfect. Another exquisite blend from C&D!

Mild and mellow,
Mostly Flue cured Virginia leaf. The burley and dark fired are quite minimal, even to the point that they are barely noticeable. All ingredients make for a mild delight with just the right flavor. Simply scrumptious.

Misinterpretation
This tobacco blend is designed to be more like a Turkish ( rhymes with jiggerette). Hence the acrid taste and aroma. If you understand this blend more, the more you’ll appreciate it it.

My favorite C&D blend!
( This fine flake is better than any of those European Blends, and the tobacco is grown in the U.S ) The Virginia is up there with the best of the Virginias out there. The dark fired Burley and perique add the spice. What a fine blend! I’d give this one more star if I could. Sip slowly with eyes closed. This one has some horsepower, ahhh, enjoy. Friggin amazing!

Autumn in a pipe! This is a most enjoyable blend, that will absolutely turn heads for compliments. Good old rocking chair tobacco. This tobacco may need a wee bit of air and sun to dry out. Lights easy, stays lit. Tastes as good as it smells. It says, Autumn is in the air.”

If you enjoy Three Nuns, you will not enjoy this so much. Three Nuns is mellow hay like Virginia with just a tinge of dark fired. This blend is run of the mill Virginia with quite a bit of dark fired. The blend is sharp and has a rough aroma. Every time I’ve tried to enjoy this blend it’s made my throat scratchy.

This is what a perfect oriental blend tastes like, smells like, etc. Absolutely enchanting! Double sublime!

Dan Tobacco - Old Ironsides 50g
Battleship Missouri
Having served onboard the U.S.S. Missouri BB-63 during the Gulf War/Desert Storm, I find myself quite intrigued by this blend! With the heavy dose of Latakia, one would assume the ship would list to one side. The dark fired, and perique, serve as good ballast, while the Virginia holds a steady hand at the helm. This is as smooth and as luxurious as they come. A good winters night smoke.
Peterson - Flake 50g
Still just right,
This flake still has the fresh bright zip, and sweet/ sour flavor as when Dunhill prepared this product. Exquisite rectangular medium brown flakes that need some drying time. Lovely Virginia that begs to be sipped to reap its rewards. Please know that, nothing will improve in taste or with age whilst contained in a vacuum sealed tin. Dump the tobacco in a large mason jar and stow it away. This fine flake is truly satisfying.
Peterson - Royal Yacht 50g

I once loathed this blend. I jarred up two tins and set it aside for a few years. Recently I have re-visited that jar and found it is now everything I’ve been told it was. The strength is still there, but in a more relaxed way. The Virginia is lovely and sweet. The whole blend is just wonderful.

Samuel Gawith - Navy Flake 50g
Now I understand.
If this is a Navy Flake, then I’m Sir Francis Dashwood. I smoked this right from the tin. By the way, tobacco does not age in a vacuum sealed tin. The sloppy dark flakes were damp and needed a few hours to dry. Alright, the tobacco needed direct sunlight and a power fan to dry to an ideal smokable humidity. After I loaded my pipe and added flame the Latakia was the main component I smelled and tasted. The Latakia is far over used in this blend. Strong, and aroma that is barely tolerable. UPDATE: I let this tobacco dry out until it was pale gray. Not powder dry, but darn near it. The difference in the flavor, after drying out, and aging, is AMAZING! Super sweet, and the Latakia is almost undetectable. Now I understand why this is sold out so often.

Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Scotch Flake
Quite good.
Sweet Virginia with only a tiny touch of Turkish for effect. Flavors of mild cocoa and delicious Virginia tobaccos. The Turkish nudges the cocoa along and makes for a really fine taste.
Capstan - Ready Rubbed Blue 1.75oz
The Virginia
I smoked this fine tobacco thirty years ago before it broke my heart and disappeared. I’m quite thankful it’s back and now offered in a rubbed out version. There’s no other Virginia quite like Capstan. This is good pure Virginia that has already been aged for you. So satisfying!
Peterson - University Flake 50g
Boring
Here we have a Virginia and Burley blend, with very little umph. A berry topping is added to try and make up for the lack of flavor. I do however enjoy boosting this up a notch with HH Old Dark Fired.
Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Brown Bogie
Archaic good,
I bought a pound or so of this rope back in 2016. I immediately put it into a tall mason jar and into an old steamer trunk for a long rest. This is Autumn 2022 and I’m now enjoying this fine tobacco. It still has the nic punch! I cut it with a cigar lance, rubbed it out and loaded into my Northern Briar Canadian. Flavor is smoky and mellow. Taste is bold and pleasing. Mellow but heavy. It’s good if that’s your thing. Be careful with this one,it could knock your senses back to the sailing days.

Ok, this is good,
I’ve tried many CnD blends . Most of those blends I really didn’t care for, except Briar Fox, and now this one. Billy Budd hits the Latakia spot.
Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Bosun Cut Plug
The drier the better
Let this age out until it nearly dries out. It’s a fine line but WOW, is this ever good. You still get a little of the Lakeland flavor, and the tobacco is soft, mellow and will really surprise you with how much flavor you’ll really get.
Sutliff - Revelation Match
Far better,
As another brother of the briar has noted, this definitely is better than the original. The original had small cubed burley, and maybe most of the leaf we see here. This blend is quite similar, but better. Large leafy pieces of bright Virginia, chunks of burley, pieces of fire cured and..perique? If perique is here it’s very hush. This is an all day smoke with excellent flavor and pleasant room note.
Sir Walter Raleigh - Regular 7oz
A trusted friend
No longer made in USA. Now made in Denmark with the same recipe and cut. Still warm and comfy, cool and never a bite. The only thing I notice is the cocoa. It seems to have more cocoa added with the licorice flavoring. Still tastes great, maybe, just maybe…even better.

Turkish Cigarette.
Ribbon cut tobacco with the various types mentioned above. The ratio of the different types of tobacco make for a toasty buttery smooth blend. The taste is balanced and rich. After taste is of fine Turkish cigarettes. A most outstanding blend of tobaccos.

Supreme
Sweeter than Red Rap. Smoky, and leathery like Red Rap. It’s Red Rap, with the added sweeter Virginia. Hits the right spots.

If you enjoy Burley tobacco, you will absolutely fall for this one! Wonderful billows of burley with just a hint of sweet hay background. Needs to be in a one pound bag.
Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Scotch Mixture
Mellow,
Mellow, and malt like, though I’m quite sure there is no Scotch whisky used in this blend. The Latakia is only there to create a different taste and flavor, not to present as a smoky english. I might purchase again.

Pleasantly delicious
This taste like a lot of other…American aromatics. The tobacco looks just like the picture. The taste is pleasant and there isn’t a hint of Lakeland essence. DRY IT OUT A BIT. This blend comes wee bit damp. Has Aquitaine a nice aroma. Burns well.
Cornell & Diehl - Star of the East 2oz
Growing on me,
The more I smoke this tobacco, the more I like it. It’s a medium English, American style. No flavors of added aromatics, just really fine leaf mixed in the right proportions. Natural tobacco aromas that have a warm cozy feel. This is rocking chair with good book tobacco.

In over forty years of smoking a pipe, this has to be, without a doubt, the best Aromatic I’ve ever tried.
Cornell & Diehl - Epiphany
Not bad.
I like this blend, but I’m not exactly bowled over by it. As far as it being like the old Revelation, I think it needs more burley. This blend has a nice satisfying taste and flavor. I added 2oz. Of Sutliff’s Burley Delight to 4 oz. of Epiphany, it became more like the Relevation I remember.
La Gloria Cubana - Serie R #5 Natural

A consistently good cigar, year after year. Delicious in every way. Leaves quite a nice after taste.
Solani - Silver Label - 660 100g
Supreme cream
This tobacco comes in a non- vacuum sealed tin, but please, don’t let that bother you. A generous amount of slightly broken flake tucked inside a plastic pouch. The red Virginia is sweet and sour, with a creamy smoky fired leaf. I taste no additives in this blend. Balance in this blend is key. An incredibly good tobacco. If this tobacco came in bulk, I’d purchase five pounds.
McConnell - Scottish Flake 50g

Tasteless. Not worth the price. Don’t stock up on this one. I’d turn back if I were you.
McConnell - Special London Fine Cut 50g
Roll roll, roll your...
Good tasting flue cured Virginia in shag cut. Shag is quite a fine cut and makes the tobacco look almost like moss. It makes for easy use and smoking. You can smoke this in a pipe if you like. Suit yourself, it’s good either way, and has a nice aftertaste.
Arango - Balkan Supreme
To heck with a Balkan Sobrainie,
If this isn’t equal to Balkan Sobraine, it’s better. Smooth, creamy rich and leathery. A morning smoke or an all day pipe. Delicious!

A nice bright and smoky taste. Not overly smoky, but just enough Virginia to make it smooth and quite enjoyable.
St. Bruno - Ready Rubbed 1.75oz
Smooth Satisfaction,
Some ready rubs are not like the flake versions. Have no fear, this ready rubbed is the same quality recipe as the flake version. The only difference, it’s already broken up, rubbed out for you. The dark fired Kentucky leaf and Virginia, together with a very conservative amount of tonquin bean extract, make for quite a satisfying smoke. So glad this has been reintroduced into the states. I smoke this daily.
F&K - Lancer Ready Rubbed

Long, dark, slightly broken flakes. The rich scent of far eastern tobaccos, (Latakia) that have been smoked over wood fires. The naturally sweet tingle of Virginia tobacco. I remember no English style tobacco as good as Lancer Slices in my forty-five years of smoking pipes. Glorious is a word that comes to mind.

It’s finally back from a five year hiatus! If you’ve never tried this one you haven’t tried Burley. Not sure why it was called London Blend, but ok. Creamy chocolate Burley tobacco. One of the very best Burley pipe tobaccos ever.

This pipe tobacco, when smoked, tastes and smells just like it does in the bag...maybe even better. I’ve never gotten so many compliments! My wife, who hates the smell of all things tobacco even said this one smelled nice, I thought I’d fall off the porch!
Sir Walter Raleigh - Regular 14oz
Like an old friend
The older I get, the more of this tobacco I smoke. This Sir Walter Raleigh pipe tobacco is the consistency of Grape Nuts cereal. It’s easy to load and light. The flavor is akin to a good cup of coffee. It doesn’t taste like coffee, it just gives the same good satisfaction. True burley chocolate flavors. This was my first pipe tobacco and it looks like I’ll be ending with it.

My Dad passed recently and I was going through his pipes and blends and found this tobacco. Pressed into a nice firm block plug, this blend smells of almond extract. The room note and flavor is beautiful. Delicious from start to finish.
Sutliff - 507C Virginia Slices
Just Virginia,
This is a pure flue cured Virginia flake that comes in long strips. Nothing fancy here. Taste is pure and satisfying. The added sweetness( if there is one), never goes forward of the leaf. A very pleasant Virginia flake. Get enough to set some back in your old cedar chest or trunk of the car. Put it somewhere that you’ll almost forget it was there. Age does this flake Justice, and you’ll salivate smoking this after 1+ years aging. It’s excellent new, and phenomenal aged.
Capstan - Flake Yellow 1.75oz

This is blue’s flue cured brother. If you have been a cigarette smoker you’ll appreciate this one. Tastes a lot like Dunhill Red cigarettes. This is not bad. In fact it’s rather nice. Pure mellow Virginia, flue curing that brings out the sugars in the leaf, all goes really good. Burns really nice, and tastes great.
Prince Albert - Prince Albert 14oz

Made up of the finest Tennessee and Kentucky white burley tobacco, this is quite a simp,e blend. Nutty, chocolate, and not a bite in the whole tin. One of the best to break in a new pipe.
Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Ennerdale Flake

I’m smoking this blend that I have had aging in a large mason jar since 2012 when I purchased it here on SP. I let the tobacco have some air for about 48 hours after unsealing. Now to the smoke; The floral essence is undetectable. What is detected is beautiful deep Virginia that has been rounded by the burley. The almond taste is there and adds a very refreshing soft nutty note. The nicotine content is medium, and the room aroma is very pleasant. A beauty of a blend!

Here’s a tobacco that has weathered the test of time. It’s still around because it’s that good. Pure Tennessee and Kentucky, white burley tobacco with just a smidgen of season. You will not find a bite at all in this tobacco as it burns cool. Has a pleasant chocolate flavor that burley tobacco is known for. Soft, and comfortable, just like grndmaw’s quilt.
Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Dark Bird's Eye

Stout and made to keep the smoker full of nicotine and alert whilst mending the nets. Try as you might to smoke it slow to reach that deep flavor, the harshness whalops you over the head. While you may need this for the balls to four, I’ll pass.
Sutliff - 212 - Burley Delight

Here’s an old timer tasting burley. This has a gentle cocoa taste and may bite if puffed to vigorously.
Balkan Sasieni - Balkan Sasieni 50g
One of, if not the best, English blends.
Opening the tin of this tobacco is akin to smelling the new leather interior of a new car, only add a little smokiness. The tin aroma on this one is one of the best produced. Easy to load ribbon much that is like Dunhill London blend. In the pipe and burning the blend gives off incredible rewards of mouth watering smokies, leather, sweet Virginia, all wrapped up in a harmonious love affair.
Amphora - Original Blend 1.75oz

I ordered a pack of this last year, and have just now got around to smoking it. I can understand why this has been around so long. ITS REALLY GOOD! I remember seeing Amphora being sold at Walgreens in the large metal tin. The label used to read, “ Doue Egbert’s Amphora”. Soft cocoas and burley bring to life a refreshingly delicious smoke. The room note is pleasant, and when I get back in my truck after I’ve been smoking this, the interior smells like cookies or brownies just out of the oven. This tobacco really should be offered in bulk. I’m ordering more!

If you like camp fires, brush fires,and maybe forest fires, you’ll probably really like this. The VIRGINIA is bold, but creamy smooth. This wonderful tobacco is the best of both worlds with a nicotine dose that will keep you going for the whole day. I’d strongly warn against smoking this in your place of residence. I can imagine Black beard smoking this.
