Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Ennerdale Flake 50g
Don’t worry
As with the previous reviewer, I also had shied away from this and other Lakeland blends for fear they would “ghost” a pipe, turns out this blend is pretty subtle mix. Lots of flavors and all of them pleasing. Quality tobacco flavors from the burly (nutty, chocolate) and the Virginia (sweetness, acidity), floral notes from the topping along with the rum sweetness, hint of vanilla. This is a really solid offering and will see my smoking rotation regularly. Do yourself a favor and give this a run
Cult - Blood Red Moon 50g
Heavy
I mean this is a heavy aromatic. Tobacco isn’t something I can really taste in this blend. That said it is pretty great. Chocolate cherry and vanilla. The room note is pleasing to pretty much everyone. Burns nice and not real hot. It can bite if you smoke too fast but when your sip turns into a swig it has some leniency. Tastes great (if you’re looking for a change of pace) and the lack of complaints from non smokers nearby make this a winner in my book.
Cornell & Diehl - Old Joe Krantz 8oz
Haunted bookshop but different
Basically haunted bookshop but not. Similar to same profile to my palette. Mostly nutty, chocolate burley a smidge of spicy perique. A smidge of Virginia twang and sweetness. If you like haunted bookshop you’ll like old Joe krantz. I need to smoke these back to back and figure out which I like more or if they are even as similar as my mind makes them. Great smoke either way.
Cornell & Diehl - Haunted Bookshop 2oz
Everyday
Not my number 1 but in my top 10 list, of regular smokes. If you like burley and Virginia this will hit for you. Burley forward, don’t even really notice the perique. Solid smoke. Similar to old Joe krantz
Cornell & Diehl - Bijou 2oz
Better with some age
Pretty decent smoke fresh but definitely on the spicy side. Better with some amount of age to mellow it out, even just a few months does wonders. Not my all time favorite blend but it is in my top 20 and I plan to keep cellaring some to see how it is with differing stages of age on it
Capstan - Flake Yellow 1.75oz
Good but not Great
Solid Virginia blend. Sweet, citrusy, light casing or topping adds a bit of extra sweetness. Not the most complex, knock your socks off smoke, price point is a bit high for what it is but it is definitely smokeable and enjoyable. Even if STG wasn’t (assuming the rumors are true) eliminating this blend the price point would keep this from being my go to straight Virginia but I will absolutely smoke the tins I have cellared.
HU - Makhuwa 100g
Solid VaBur blend
Really nice Virginia blend, light casing or topping really adds a subtle flavor and sweetness to the overall profile. Nutty, chocolately burley; sweet, bright slightly citrusy, Virginias. Bit of spice and darker sweetness from the perique. I smoke a lot of straight Virginia blends (HH, capstan, newminster 400, OGS, 507c etc) but this one has made me start exploring more burly and burley/virginia blends. Really, really solid smoke! Also check out HU Nebari for what tastes (to my palette, anyways) like the same blend with orientals added for even more depth of flavor and another total banger of a blend. Smokable straight from the tin but it does smoke a bit wet if you don’t dry it slightly prior to lighting so I have been letting mine sit out for about an hour to dry with slightly better results (fewer relights, drier smoke, less moisture to fight)
HU - Nebari 100g
Banger
I’ll preface this with the fact that I’m a long time (couple decades) cigar smoker but only short time (couple years) pipe smoker and I prefer VaPers, VaBurs and oriental blends over English and Balkan blends… this blend and frankly all the HU blends I’ve smoked so far just hit. Flavors are complex and plentiful, the variety of different cuts to the tobacco help here I’m sure as the burn rates would be different between the cubed, flake, and ribbon cuts of tobacco. There’s a nice chocolate note from the casing or from the burley or both, nice sour floral note from the orientals, pleasant room note, and nice sweetness from the Virginias and sweet and spicy flavor from the Perique. The casing or topping used is pretty mild/minimal and adds a nice extra level of depth. Similar casing or topping used on their Makhuwa blend as well with similar result, just a bit of added depth. Only draw back is limited availability, slightly wet burning when fresh out the tin and requires a few relights, let it dry for a couple hours and it’s near perfect for my tastes Update: this blend still rocks. If you like sweet, spicy, chocolate with a bit of that Virginia sour citrus, this stuff is the jam. Gotta be my favorite smoke as I smoke it more often than anything else. If I want the chocolate of a burley it’s got it. The sour citrus twang of a Virginia, it’s got it. Floral notes of an oriental, check. If you’re looking for the Smokey/peaty taste of an English or fire cured, well nope but minus that it has everything you’d want. Scratches that itch for most everything
