A beginner smoke for veteran pipers
This blend stands out over all other bulk aromatics to me. A lot of light aromatic blends lack nuance, not this blend. If packed lightly and smoked at a normal pace, there are plenty of natural tobacco flavors to be tasted. The golden Virginia cavendish is what sets this blend apart from your typical vanilla bulk aromatics. I can smoke this blend and not get any fuss from the wife about a stinky unpleasant smell. This blend pleases the non smokers around you because it has a yummy vanilla caramel aroma. This blends pleases the smoker for its subtle Virginia tobacco flavors. No bite or goop when smoked correctly.
Captain Black - Original 1.5oz
Better than I expected!
What can I say that hasn’t already been said? This is captain black original after all, the white pouch aromatic that everyone has at least tried once. I waited until I was about 2 years into my pipe-smoking endeavors to try this blend. I had heard other review’s online saying how “run of the mill” this blend was. That it’s not good and not bad either. As someone who only smokes cavendish forward aromatics, I was optimistic to give this blend a true shot. I got myself a 1.5 oz pouch from my local cigar shop and probably paid too much for it. I hear other smokers say how they can get this stuff at any of their local gas stations or drug stores. Not in my town. I was pleased to find that the pouch itself was sealed. After breaking the seal I stuck my nose down into the pouch and immediately got the smell of raisins, vanilla and chocolate. More than half of the blend is black cavendish with some small strands of Virginia and burley in the mix. A common ribbon cut. The cavendish wasn’t a heap of large chunks, which I like. The moisture was just a hair past too moist for me. I never transferred this blend over to a jar so by the time I got half way through the pouch the moisture was just right. This blend lights very easily. Great smoke volume and overall flavor. It wasn’t instant tongue bite like some people make out this blend to be. For the most part I got your typical black cavendish flavor with intertwining notes of vanilla, chocolate and some kind of dark fruit note like a date or plum. It can get a little hot if you puff too much towards the bottom of the bowl. The blend getting too hot will result with a burnt out ash like taste, that I feel higher quality aromatics don’t do. So.. no frills, nothing extravagant or mind blowing. Just a modest aromatic that is in all honesty, satisfying. I’m going to start using my experience with captain black original as a standard. If the blend I’m smoking is worse than captain black, don’t bother and get rid of it. I don’t see myself buying more of this blend as I have stock piles and higher quality blends. But if I was stranded on an island and only had a pouch of captain black I wouldn’t be all that upset.

After opening the tin and getting a whiff of the vanilla/,caramel/ fruit flavoring I thought it was in for a burnt tongue. I Jared this stuff up in a rather large mason with lots of extra air. Let it sit for a few months before smoking. Smoking out of my nuttens bing with no dry time, I was very impressed. The star of the show is the Cavendish. The Virginia and burley and almost undetectable. A creamy rich full bodied smoke with notes of vanilla/caramel and some dark fruit. The blend puts out of lot of smoke and doesn't get all that hot considering how much topping is added. If your looking for a aromatic blend that has that classic Cavendish scent and taste than this is it. I'll add too that that it's slow burning.
