Peterson - Sweet Killarney 50g
The Jury is still out -UPDATED
Smoked my second bowl of Sweet Killarney. This time in a Molina briar with a 9mm filter. The filter, I suppose, slowed down the burn so the tobacco smoked more evenly with less bite. It still burned hot, and I used the shank rather than the bowl to support the pipe. The flavor was less pronounced (because of the filter?) but the tobacco smoked evenly and longer than my first bowl. Either way, I'm inclined to add Sweet Killarney to the rotation. Offers a challenge for the smoker to adjust to the tobacco, and the tobacco to adjust to the pipe. _______________________________________________ I wanted to try Sweet Killarney some time ago looking for a replacement for Sutliff's Molto Dulce, but was confused by the many conflicting reviews on this site. Cool, no bite. Burns your tongue. Slow burning. Burns too fast. Finally decided to give it try and find out for myself. I enjoyed the caramel flavor but found it burned way too fast and heated up quickly, with tongue bite...until the bottom of the bowl when the heat cooled down and the pipe smoked slowly with no tongue bite. So, I'm still not sure how to take this tobacco. I smoked it in a Peterson Sherlock Holmes unfiltered, non-system pipe. My next pipe will be in a filtered Molina or Savinelle. I want to like this tobacco. I enjoyed the flavor so I'll keep on trying different pipes. I'll update the review, if anyone cares, after a second or third pipe. Thanks.

Seattle Pipe Club - Plum Pudding 2oz
Great Taste with No Bite
Tried my first smoke of Plum Pudding in a Tom Spanu Sicilian briar pipe with no filter. This was my first attempt at plug tobacco and I had some difficulty lighting it and keeping it lite at first. Nonetheless, the flavor was there from the first puff. My palate isn't refined enough to differentiate the various tobaccos, and I don't have enough BS to describe the flavors, but, it did taste great! I think the predominant taste was the Perique because of the spicy 'pepper jack' bite. That flavor lasted through the entire smoke but wasn't at strong towards the bottom of the pipe. My second smoke was in a Savinelle filtered pipe. The Perique didn't stand out like it did in the unfiltered pipe. The remaining flavors were pretty consistent throughout. Both pipes were smokey, smooth and full of flavor. I've been trying to find a replacement for Sutliff Molto Dolce. Plum Pudding is nowhere near as sweet, but the tobacco flavors blend well for a thoroughly enjoyable smoke. Looks like Plum Pudding will be a regular in my rotation.

Rivertown Tobacco Works - Sunset Velvet
Jury still out
Smoked my first bowl of Sunset Velvet and the jury is still out. Like most Rivertown blends, the tobacco smokes smoothly and cleanly. Unlike other reviews I've read, I didn't experience a strong taste of sweetness in the blend. It smoked a little dry, but with no bite. Smoked in a meerschaum bowl so didn't experience any ghosting. Will have to update this review after a few more bowls in briar. A good smoke, but not great.

HU - Night Owl 100g
Strong Taste Relaxing Smoke
I generally smoke mild tobaccos, but wanted to try something with a stronger taste. Night Owl fit the bill perfectly. Little to no bite, depending on what pipe I'm using, but delivers strong flavor and room note. It's a pleasant change of pace from my mostly mild tobaccos. The pipe does seem to make a difference. First bowl was in a filtered Savinelle Miele 316K. Very pleasant and favorable. Next bowl was an unfiltered Meerschaum. Still very pleasant, strong flavor and little bite. Third bowl was an unfiltered Peterson Sherlock Holmes. Night Owl burned a little hotter and with a bit more bite. While I won't be smoking this every day, I will definitely enjoy the occassional change of pace. Very good tobacco!

Rivertown Tobacco Works - Dark 70%
Too much nicotine hit for my taste
Dark 70% is an enjoyable smoke that is smooth burning with good flavor and room note. little is any bite. Would recommend this if you are ok with a higher nicotine content. Not for me.

Rivertown Tobacco Works - Sir Vanderberry
Mild and Cool
Light and slow burning. No bite. Enjoyable smoke. I like to relax on the front porch with this mild, cool burning tobacco. Not much flavor overall, but with a good room note. Also, little is any nicotine hit.
