I have to admit the cover sold me on this book. The five Canadian pipe makers covered are all interesting in their own way. Brigham, along with Blatter and Blatter and Julius Vesz cover the long established makers. Briar Sweat and Tears and MacQueen are the smaller newer artisans. Moss featured these makers as they represent more affordable pipes but all with unique Canadian history. I found the book interesting and refreshing. The introductory chapter on pipes and pipe smoking was good and in a way updates or at least challenges some of the pipe mythology found in most of the earlier famous tomes by Hacker, Newcombe and others. The inclusion of MacQueen was of particular interest as their wood stemmed churchwardens and fantasy appeal are not what I consider traditional pipes, but again a unique Canadian craft. Moss references other books of Canadian history…a couple soon on my reading list. It was an easy pleasant read while puffing my SBang Bent Apple.
