McConnell - Red Virginia 50g
A Favorite: But is it a stand out?
If I had to say it plainly, I suppose this blend is just a bit quirky. Nothing about it is really unexpected for a Virginia/Perique. It's fairly middle of the road for the choice components, and I find similarities to other names in the current Kopp Family. I do believe it when they say there is chocolate, which is an odd choice in concept. I don't really taste it, but the tin smells almost exactly like a cherry cordial. I could almost eat it. The overall presence I get from it when smoked is how you might say a coffee is chocolatey. It doesn't taste of chocolate or fruit exactly, but it is more so than you might find in other blends. Overall, I really enjoy it and reach for it often, and it is somewhat unique, but not perhaps as tidy as one might want.
Peter Heinrichs - Curly Special 100g
Excellent if you can get it.
If it wasn't for price and availability, this would be my daily driver. As it stands, this stands atop for my favorite Virginia/Perique blends. It isn't off the walls complex or perhaps the most unique Va/Per you ever had. It is however well balanced, well behaved, and with a good character to stand on. If you enjoy Kopp Virginias, or Va/Pers generally, it will be familiar. However, I do find an intriguing dark and smokey nuance to it that almost reminds me of Dark Fired. I'm not saying it is, but it's quite a bit darker overall than you might expect.

Aleister Crowley: The Beast That Inspired The Beast
- ► Geeze, I knew these guys were mullet wielding hipsters, but come on. Religion aside, Crowley is still someone best left aside, especially when trying to sell to many who wouldn’t want a thing to do with that man.
- ► I don’t think anyone was really clamoring for Evangelical pipe tobacco in any fashion, and this is coming from a Catholic. Whatever your beliefs and how the pipe fits into it, most seem to keep the pipe and tobacco itself separate. It isn’t unreasonable to not want to associate with occultism, even in a somewhat offhand and tenuous way.

All Pipes Considered: Peterson Cobble
- ► I wonder if he thinks Peterson pipes are trash and cobbled together? The world may never know.
Codger Country: Royal Comfort
- ► I don’t think ‘codger’ is quite the selling point you think it is when you want us to pay such a premium on a tin.
