Kopp - Year of the Dragon 100g
Chemical Crackle
When I first opened the tin I was excited by an inviting and somewhat fruity aroma. My first bowl was pleasant and I was surprised by an enjoyable crackle as the tobacco burned. The smoke was pleasant and the tobacco burned well but seamed to be a little prone to getting hot. This wasn't a big deal and I just slowed my cadence and had no additional issues. The negative issues started coming up once I was about half way through the tin where the tobacco lost a lot of its fruity aroma and the flavor began to shift to a chemical taste. By the time that I was down to the last couple of bowls I was just about to the point of throwing it away as the chemical taste had made it just about un-smokeable. I can't see myself buying another tin. There are plenty of other options that offer a crackle that don't end up tasting like they were dug out from between bathroom cleaners.

Sutliff - Z92 Vanilla Custard
Should have tried it sooner
I purchased Sutliff Z92 Vanilla Custard 6 months ago and only just now tried it and oh how I should have tried it when I first received it. I missed so many opportunities to enjoy this wonderful smoke. I had my first bowl tonight watching my boys baseball games and had a number of people around me wondering about where the pleasant smell was coming from and someone that must have been familiar with pipe smoking pointed in the direction of me and my pipe. There wasn't a single complaint to be heard from anyone watching the games. As for my experience I was quite pleased with the flavor. The vanilla really came through and was present through the entire bowl. It was a little goopy but didn't bring any bite with it. Nor did it require more than 2-3 relights over about a 75 minute smoke. Just a nice steady, puffing pace through a windy evening watching a couple games of baseball. Well done Sutliff on a fantastic blend. This is one that I will be keeping on hand from now on.

Fell for the season
With Christmas right around the corner I wanted to be ready for the season so I picked up a tin to see if it would fit the spirit of the season. I popped the tin looking forward to experiencing the joyful tin note as described and it fell flat on it's face... nothing even remotely close to what was advertised. Not wanting to give up on first impressions I went ahead and packed the pipe and once again it fell flat on it's face... nothing. I am not yet willing to write it off completely but I don't have high hopes on finding any redeeming qualities. I'll give it a month to breath and give it another shot but odds are I won't be picking up a second tin. Last thoughts: If it is advertised as a unique holiday blend then it should at the very least harken feelings of Christmas beyond the artwork on the label, but sadly the artwork is the best you are going to get. In the esteemed words of my wife, "Smells nothing like Christmas."
